  • About Munnar Arikomban

Arikomban is a famous wild elephant who once lived in the Munnar region of Kerala, India, which is known for its tea plantations. He was a beloved animal among locals and was named after his preference for eating the traditional Kerala rice dish called "ari."

According to reports, Arikomban was believed to have supernatural powers, and many people in the region considered him to be a kind of deity. However, he was also known to be aggressive at times, and there were concerns about human-elephant conflict in the area.

To ensure the safety of both the elephant and humans in the region, the Kerala government decided to relocate Arikomban in 2020. It was a major operation involving forest officials and veterinarians who sedated the animal before moving him to the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.

    Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area that is known for its rich biodiversity and is located in the Cardamom Hills. Covering an area of about 925 square km, it provides ample space and resources for the elephant to thrive in a safe and suitable habitat while also ensuring the safety of the local communities.

Arikomban became a local legend not only for his love for the traditional Kerala rice dish but also for his unique personality and behavior. He was a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Kerala and the importance of preserving wildlife and their natural habitats.

Overall, Arikomban's story is a testament to the beauty of Kerala's natural landscape and the need to balance human development with wildlife conservation.
